In 1955, more than 300 ardent youths from Shanghai came to the San Li Dong Coal Mine to realize their dreams of contributing to the Construction of the Great Northwest. Fifty years later, few of these men are alive, but their stories, and the struggles of working a land full of deeply buried black coal, still remain. Made by the son of a miner, this film focuses on the miners who journeyed to San Li Dong and the hopes they carried with them half a century ago. The miners captured on film include: Qi Guoqi (deceased), Gu Longxiang, Shen Longgen, Wang Zhengxiang, Yao Hongchang, Ge Dengfa, Zhang Baisheng, Lu Rongchu, Zhou Shougen, Luo Shijun, Ding Fuzhen, Tong Guang, Gao Zhangshun, Chen Yixiang, and Zhu Yongsheng (deceased).
